The four Gandhi picture post cards- a first from the Indian P&T Department- were released in 1951.   These were also the first Indian inland postal cards printed in Hindi (Devanagiri script).  Already gone was the dual script usage (Devanagiri and Persian) that was first represented in the Gandhi memorial stamp set.

The release of these cards coincided with Gandhi's eighty-second birthday.  The cards, with a face value of the prevailing domestic postcard rate (9 pies) were sold for twice the face value- at 1½ as.   Printing reverted to  the India Security Press, which was robbed of the opportunity to print the Gandhi Memorial stamps.
