On April 15 1997, the Republic of the Marshall Islands issued the first stamp of Gandhi that did not specifically refer to him by name. Instead, it was under the title: "Nonviolent Resistance in Quest for Freedom" and represented one of 15 stamps commemorating the first decade of this century. Other unmentioned personalities in this set were Enrico Caruso (Musician), Pablo Picasso (Artist), Major Walter Reed (Pathologist), Frank Brownwell (Brownie Camera Inventor), Wright Brothers (Aircraft), Guglielmo Marconi (Radio), Albert Einstein (Physicist) and Sigmund Freud (Psychoanalyst). Events that were commemorated are: Discovery of Oil in the Middle East, Boxer Rebellion in China, Paris to Beijing Auto Race, Emigration to the United States, San Francisco Earthquake and Launching of the battleship Dreadnought. The stamps were designed by Paul and Chris Calle and printed by Unicover Corporation, using the four color offset process. |
