Almanac

On May 20 1969, Chad was the last of six west African nations that issued a french omnibus memorial set in the 1968-69 period to commemorate Gandhi, King, Luthuli and the Kennedys.  The others who participated in this omnibus issue are Cameroon, Gabon, Mauritania (only Gandhi and King stamps), Niger and Upper Volta (only Gandhi and Luthuli stamps).  In 1997, Chad issued another set of two stamps honoring Gandhi on the 50th anniversary of India's independence.  Both these stamps also depict the official state emblem of India and two varieties of orchids (?).  A millennium related issue came out in 1999, with a design showing Gandhi with Mountbatten.
