On April 21 1967, this former capital of French Equatorial Africa was the
first African nation to issue a Gandhi stamp. Although several foreigners were
featured on their air-mail issues, this was a first for domestic postage rate in Congo.
This was the only issue from French Africa that commemorated Gandhi alone. The
second Gandhi stamp was issued 25 years later, in 1992. The design of this Gandhi
issue is unique, in that it included images of both Gandhi and Martin Luther King, with
his 1964 Nobel peace prize mentioned.
