The Gambia was one of seven African nations that issued Gandhi stamps in 1998.  The others included Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone in West Africa and Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia in East Africa.  The biographical issue included five Gandhi stamps from various stages in his life: at age 47 (1916), age 60 , age 61 and age 62 (1932). The design follows the same theme as the 1998 Gandhi issues from Ghana and Guyana.
