In 1997, Uganda issued Gandhi stamps on the occasion of India's 50th
anniversary of independence. Uganda was also one of seven African nations that
issued Gandhi stamps in 1998. The others included Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra
Leone, Tanzania and Zambia. The set included two
stamps, a lower value of 600 /- (which was printed in a souvenir sheet as a block of four)
and a higher 2500/- value in a smaller souvenir sheet. The design follows the same
theme as the 1998 Gandhi issues from Dominica, Liberia, St. Vincent, Sierra Leone,
Tanzania and Zambia, all issued by the Inter Governmental Philatelic Corporation in New
York.
