On October 4 1968, Burkina Faso was
the second of six west African nations that issued a French omnibus memorial set in the
1968-69 period to commemorate Gandhi, King, Luthuli and the Kennedys. Burkina
Faso (then Upper Volta) shared an Airmail Gandhi stamp with one of Chief Albert John
Luthuli, the standard bearer of Gandhi's ideas of non-violent resistance in South Africa,
on the same day when Niger issued a set commemorating Gandhi, King and the
Kennedys.
